Church Search Portsmouth 2008-9

The Campus Ministry staff wants your stay at Shawnee State University to be as
fulfilling as possible. As for those of you who are from out of town, we especially
want to help you settle into a kind and caring fellowship.

This is why we are creating a pamphlet of area churches called "Church Search." We are currently
working with several local congregations to create a pamphlet that allows participating churches to
describe themselves in one page. On each page, you will find information about each church such as:
denomination, music style, size, and location. Each church will also give a descriptive paragraph about its
purpose, and invite you to call or e-mail its Student Contact within the church.

Also included in this edition is a street map that shows the location of every church in Portsmouth. There
are more than 20 churches within a few minutes walking distance from the university. Nearly 100 more
are within less than 15 minutes drive!

We also want to use this exciting new pamphlet to bring you information about upcoming events and
volunteer opportunities in our area!

The mission:

Now Campus Ministry is on a mission to bring the students at Shawnee State an equally exciting and
helpful guide. Starting college can be difficult, especially when you are from out of town. But you are not
alone!

There are several church fellowships in Portsmouth waiting to welcome you with open arms. Please take
advantage of this information. We know it can be intimidating just walking into a place where you don't
know anybody--this is why we try to make each church page as extensive as possible, so that there are no
surprises. You can visit the church's webpage, or e-mail the Student Contact--maybe even meet for lunch
beforehand.

The idea:

The idea for Portsmouth "Church Search" came when Campus
Ministry board member, Tiffany Pistole and her husband Jeremiah
moved to Scotland in 2006. While Jeremiah was taking classes in
Irish and Scottish Studies, Tiffany was studying Theology--both at
Aberdeen University. Missing their church fellowship back home,
Tiffany set out to find a fellowship within Aberdeen. While searching
the web, she found a link to Origen Scotland's webpage, and there, a
comprehensive guide called "Church Search." From there, she and
her husband were able to scroll through the extensive list of local
churches, and chose a church to try. Luckily, they only had to try once!
The guide was so accurate that they were able to find a vibrant church
with 80+ students, two blocks from their apartment!!
